Thumb Rules for Cow Feeding | Dairy Cow Feeding Guide for Farmers

Proper feeding of dairy cows is the most important factor for high milk production, good health, and reproductive efficiency. Many farmers are confused about how much fodder, concentrate, or minerals a cow actually needs. To make it simple, here are the Thumb Rules for Feeding Cows, based on standard guidelines followed in dairy science and ICAR recommendations.

1️⃣ Dry Matter Requirement (DM Requirement)

Dry matter is the portion of feed that remains after removing water.

👉 Adult Cow: Needs 2–2.5% of body weight as Dry Matter
👉 High Milk Yield Cow: Needs 3% of body weight as DM

Example:
A 450 kg cow → 450 × 2.5% = 11.25 kg DM/day

This DM should come from green fodder, dry fodder, and concentrate.

2️⃣ Roughage : Concentrate Ratio

The correct balance of fodder and concentrate is essential.

Milk YieldRatio (Roughage : Concentrate)
Up to 8 liters/day70 : 30
8–12 liters/day60 : 40
12–20 liters/day50 : 50

A high-yielding dairy cow always requires more concentrate.

3️⃣ Green Fodder Requirement

Green fodder provides energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals.

  • A cow needs 20–25 kg of green fodder/day

  • Provide a mixture of legume fodder (Alfalfa, Berseem, Lucerne) + non-legumes (Jowar, Maize, Napier)

Legume fodder increases milk quality and reproductive performance.

4️⃣ Dry Fodder Requirement

Dry fodder provides fiber and supports rumen health.

  • 4–6 kg/day

  • Prefer good quality hay instead of low-nutrition straw

  • Wheat straw, paddy straw can be given but should not be the only roughage

5️⃣ Concentrate Feeding (Very Important)

Concentrate mix or cattle feed must be given according to milk production.

👉 Rule:
1 kg concentrate for every 2.5 liters of milk

Example:
Cow giving 10 L milk/day → 4 kg concentrate/day

Early lactation cows need +1 kg extra to support body condition.

6️⃣ Water Requirement

Water is the cheapest but most ignored nutrient.

  • Cows require 60–80 liters/day

  • High-yielding cows may need 100 liters/day

  • Provide clean, fresh water 24 hours

7️⃣ Mineral Mixture and Salt

Minerals are essential for fertility, immunity, and milk production.

  • Mineral mixture: 50–60 g/day

  • Common salt: 30–40 g/day

  • UMMB (Urea Molasses Mineral Block): give in low fodder conditions

Never skip mineral mixture as Indian fodders are naturally mineral-deficient.

8️⃣ Body Condition Score (BCS)

Maintaining ideal body condition helps in high milk yield and easy conception.

  • Target BCS: 3.0–3.5

  • Thin cow → increase concentrate

  • Fat cow → reduce concentrate and avoid overfeeding

9️⃣ Feeding Schedule

The timing of feeding greatly affects digestion and milk yield.

  • Feed 2–3 times a day

  • Give concentrate during milking

  • Provide fodder after milking

  • Always give water before feeding concentrate

🔟 Don’ts in Cow Feeding (Common Mistakes)

❌ Do not give spoiled or moldy feed
❌ Do not feed excessive urea
❌ Avoid sudden diet changes
❌ Do not overcrowd animals
❌ Do not feed immediately before transportation

✔ Summary Table: Cow Feeding Thumb Rules

Parameter                  Thumb Rule
DM Intake                    2.5–3% of body weight
Green Fodder                   20–25 kg/day
Dry Fodder                   4–6 kg/day
Concentrate                                    1 kg/2.5 L milk
Mineral Mixture                  50–60 g/day
Salt                  30–40 g/day
Water                 60–100 L/day

Conclusion

Following these simple thumb rules can improve milk yield, reduce disease problems, and maintain better reproductive health in dairy cows. Balanced ration is the key to profitable dairy farming.
